Malta is an island and a state in the Mediterranean Sea. More precisely, the state of Malta owns two more inhabited islands and several very small ones, on which people do not live. In total, almost half a million people live in Malta, which is about the same as in the German city of Duisburg.
In the north of Malta is Sicily, which is part of Italy. To the south is Libya. Thus, Malta is located between Europe and Africa. A long time ago, there was a land road between the two continents. There are only a few peaks left of this, only Malta. Therefore, the island is very rocky.
Because Malta is so close to the Libyan coast, many refugees arrive there who want to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea.
