The first settlement on the territory of Budapest called Ak-Ink was founded by the Celts in the 1st century BC. e. Under the Romans, Aquincus became the center of the province of Lower Pannonia. In the Middle Ages, King Bela IV of Hungary made the city of Buda his capital. In 1867, Pest became the capital of Transleitania, one of the parts that make up the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The historic center of Budapest is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
