History Trento was founded during the Roman Empire at the foot of the rocky outcrop of the hill Doss Trento, which rises on the right bank of the river Adige (fiume Adige), and on which now stands the mausoleum of Cesare Battisti (Mausoleo a Cesare Battisti). The old city center was moved to the other side of the river, and in the Middle Ages was surrounded by a monumental wall. Around 1000, the Holy Roman Emperor Conrad II founded the Bishopric of Trent (Principato vescovile di Trento), and the city became a major religious center for a long time. It is no accident that the famous Tridentine Council was held here, which marked the beginning of the Counter-Reformation.
In general, the sixteenth century was the height of Trento's heyday, thanks to several bishops who promoted the construction of new buildings and temples. In the 19th century, the city was the subject of a sharp dispute between the troops of Napoleon and the Habsburg Empire, and only in 1919, at the end of the First World War, Trento became part of Italy.
