Estonia is a country in the north-east of Europe, located on the shores of the Baltic Sea. It borders Latvia in the south and Russia in the east. Estonia is slightly larger than Switzerland, but it has much fewer inhabitants. Many of them live in the German city of Munich. Along with Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia is part of the Baltic States.
200 years ago Estonia belonged to Sweden and then to Russia. Many of the rich in the country were Germans. In 1918, Estonia became its own state for the first time. When Russia was the Soviet Union, it conquered Estonia again.
During World War II, Estonia was also occupied by Germany. In 1991, Estonia became independent from the Soviet Union again because it collapsed. Estonia has been a member of the European Union since 2004.
