Population - 5,279,190 people (2020), or 36% of the country's population, one of the largest cities in South America. The main political, economic and cultural center of Chile. Produces 43% of the country's GDP (2005). Transport hub on the Pan American Highway. The city is located in an intermontane basin at the foot of the Andes at an altitude of about 540 meters above sea level, less than 100 km east of the Pacific Ocean, and is prone to earthquakes. The climate is Mediterranean. Founded in 1540 by the Spanish consul Pedro de Valdivia, named after Saint James. Has the status of the capital since 1817.
