It is part of the Oberhasli district. The population is 4536 people (as of December 31, 2006). The official code is 0785. Not far from the city is the Reichenbach Falls. In Meiringen there is a monument to Sherlock Holmes in memory of the stay of the great detective here and his famous fight at the Reichenbach Falls with the head of the London underworld, Professor Moriarty. According to one hypothesis, Meiringen is the birthplace of meringues.
